No airbags, no seatbelt, no steel frame, nothing between their body and a vehicle except the expectation that the driver will follow the rules. When a driver runs a red light, rolls through a crosswalk, takes a turn without checking for people on foot, or is staring at their phone instead of the road, the person walking absorbs the full impact, and the injuries are almost always severe.

Every driver in Texas has a legal obligation to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and to exercise due care to avoid striking any pedestrian (Texas Transportation Code Sections 552.003 and 552.008). That obligation doesn't go away because the driver was in a hurry or wasn't paying attention.

San Antonio has consistently been one of the most dangerous major cities in Texas for pedestrians, and many of the worst stretches are in communities where sidewalk infrastructure is incomplete, crosswalks are poorly marked, and street lighting is inadequate.
